How Dental Implants Are Done
A dental implant is a procedure that you may want to have done if you want to get most of your teeth back. However, it’s best if you know how it is done first so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into.
The first thing that will be done is the preparation of putting the implants in. First, we will check the condition of the mouth and jaw to see if implants are viable. After that, we will check the gums and bones to see if everything is good. Lastly, we'll design the implants that are custom-fitted for the patient’s mouth. Some of the preparation steps include:
- Full dental exam
- Medical history review
- Treatment evaluation
- Anesthesia plan
It’s also very important to take note that the whole process is a long one that may take months to do. There are several steps needed to take to complete the surgery. There will also be some healing periods in between steps which is why it takes so long. Typically, here are the steps or stages of dental implant surgery:
- Removal of damaged teeth
- Grafting of jawbone
- Implant surgery
- Healing of the bone
- Placement of abutment
- Artificial teeth placement
- Final healing
These are some of the main steps of dental implant surgery. After the procedure, you can expect to experience some discomfort or even pain. First, you will most likely have swelling gums which will show up in your face. You may also have bruised skin and gums. Since the surgery is fresh, you may also experience some pain where the dental implant was placed. Finally, you may or may not experience some minor bleeding. In the event of these symptoms, your dentist may prescribe some pain medicines or antibiotics.
It’s also important to take note of your diet right after surgery. We will let you know what foods are unsafe to eat during this time. A diet of soft foods and liquids will be recommended while the implant site heals. This ensures that you won’t experience any more pain nor will you do any damage to the healing area.
