Almost everyone has certainly heard of gum disease. However, there are many myths floating around about gum disease that need to be addressed, since ignoring the truth could lead to potentially severe health problems. Here, we go over a few of the most common myths about gum disease.
Myth: Gum disease isn’t that common.
Verdict: The truth is completely the opposite and gum disease is extremely common. According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all adults aged 30 and up suffer from at least some form of gum disease.
Myth: If I don’t have cavities, I won’t have gum disease.
Verdict: Not having cavities is great, however, it does not mean that you are totally free of gum disease. Most gum disease progresses painlessly, and many don’t even know that they have it. Gums that are tender or swollen and bleed easily is often a sign a gingivitis, which is the earliest and most easily reversible form of gum disease.
Myth: Gum disease causes you to lose your teeth.
Verdict: If you practice proper oral hygiene (brushing and flossing daily), eat healthily and visit your dentist regularly, there is no reason that gum disease will cause your teeth to fall out. However, early diagnosis of gum disease is important for keeping it under control and preventing it from progressing.
Myth: Bleeding gums is normal during pregnancy.
Verdict: While it is true that some women may develop a condition known as “pregnancy gingivitis”, not all women will experience it. Adding a little extra effort into your brushing and flossing routine can help prevent this. Some dentists may even recommend additional cleanings during pregnancy.
Myth: Bad breath is a sign of gum disease.
Verdict: It is true that bad breath may be an indicator or gum disease, although it may also be caused other medical disorders. Therefore, it is important to consult with your dentist if you experience a persistent foul smell or taste in your mouth. Some dentists may even refer you to a primary health care provider if they determine that your mouth seems healthy.
