Family Dentist Indianapolis Shares Different Types of Dentures
While we all hope that our natural teeth will last a lifetime, it isn't always possible. Thanks to Mitthoeffer Family Dental and advances in denture technology, you can receive stronger, more comfortable, and more natural looking dentures than ever before!
There are different types of dentures available for different situations:
-Complete dentures can replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, and rest on the gums that cover the jawbone. They can be attached to tooth roots (overdenture) or dental implants (implant overdenture) to be made more secure.
-Partial dentures will replace only some of the teeth and are attached to remaining natural teeth with attachments or clasps.
The type of denture you are receiving and your oral health will ultimately dictate the amount of time the entire process will take. Typically we find that this procedure, from taking impressions, to removing unhealthy teeth, placing implants, or making adjustments- can take less time overall and be less expensive compared to dental implants alone.
Individuals who require extractions or implant surgery will need to wait several weeks for the mouth to heal before dentures can be placed. For some people, a temporary or “immediate” denture can be placed in the mouth on the same day extractions are performed, and worn until the permanent denture is fitted.
After receiving your dentures, it will take some time to learn how to speak, eat, and smile with them. While you can ask your family dentist in Indianapolis about tips to get used to your appliance, we can suggest that you take your time in all aspects. Speak slower, eat slower...work your way up and gradually you will be used to your new smile, and your new smile will be used to you!
